Kolkata, Nov 4 JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal on Wednesday called on West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the state secretariat Nabanna here.
The two discussed investment opportunities in Bengal across sectors such as power, power systems, ports, cement and steel, an official said.
But no further details were provided about their first meeting since Adhikari assumed office in May.
JSW Group has a sizeable presence in Bengal, centred on Salboni in Paschim Medinipur district.
The group had signed an agreement with the state government in the mid-2000s to set up a 10-million-tonne greenfield steel plant at Salboni through JSW Bengal Steel Ltd. The project did not take off and was put on hold, and the group later turned to other businesses at the site.
JSW Cement’s Rs 800 crore plant at Salboni was inaugurated by then chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The unit caters to customers in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and parts of Odisha, and the company has spoken of expanding its capacity.
At the Bengal Global Business Summit in February 2025, Jindal announced an investment of Rs 16,000 crore for a 1,600 MW thermal power project at Salboni.
JSW Energy had secured the order for the greenfield project through a competitive bidding process conducted by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd.
The foundation stone for the project was laid in April 2025. JSW Energy later announced plans to double the plant’s capacity to 3,200 MW, taking the total investment to around Rs 40,000 crore.
The group had also said it plans to develop an industrial park at Salboni and has forayed into port services at Kolkata Port.
