New Delhi, October 12: CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das approached the Parliament Street police station on Monday, seeking permission to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The leaders said they would give the Delhi Police 24 hours to announce a date for the demonstration or issue another call for protests.
Security was tightened around the police station as the two CJP leaders arrived, and the road outside the premises was closed. Police also made a public announcement asking people to follow security restrictions and prohibitory orders, maintain peace and avoid unauthorised gatherings.
CJP Demands Date for Peaceful Protest at Jantar Mantar
Speaking to reporters outside the police station, CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka said the organisation was seeking a designated date to hold its protest at Jantar Mantar.
“We hope the police will give us a date. If they do not, we will make another call within 24 hours,” Ranka said.
He also criticised the security restrictions imposed across the national capital, claiming that they had affected residents and businesses, particularly with festivals approaching.
Ranka questioned why the authorities had not provided a designated location for the demonstration instead of imposing restrictions that could disrupt normal activities.
Saurav Das Says Peaceful Protest Is a Constitutional Right
CJP leader Saurav Das said peaceful protest was a constitutional right and urged the Delhi Police to specify a date and time for the demonstration.
Das said the police had repeatedly asked organisers to approach them at least 10 days before a protest. He added that the organisation was now leaving the decision to the police and asking them to announce a suitable date and time.
However, he made it clear that CJP would not allow the matter to remain pending indefinitely.
The organisation has given the Delhi Police a 24-hour ultimatum and is awaiting a response regarding permission for the proposed Jantar Mantar protest.
Delhi Police Tightens Security Amid Protest Calls
The demand for permission comes after CJP called for a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar.
Following the protest call, authorities introduced extensive security arrangements and restrictions across New Delhi. Protesters attempting to reach Jantar Mantar on Saturday and Sunday were prevented from entering the protest site.
According to the police, permission had not been granted for any demonstration at the location.
Thousands of protesters, including CJP members, opposition party leaders and student organisation representatives, were detained over the past two days, according to the report.
CJP Awaits Delhi Police Response
The latest move by CJP puts the focus on the organisation’s demand for permission to conduct a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The leaders have urged the Delhi Police to provide a clear response within 24 hours.
The next step will depend on whether the authorities announce a date and time for the proposed protest or whether CJP issues another call for demonstrations.
