New Delhi, Sep 22: The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for elections to 11 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Of these, 10 seats are from Uttar Pradesh and one from Uttarakhand. The terms of the sitting members are set to expire on November 25.
The Election Commission has also announced a bye-election to a vacant Rajya Sabha seat in West Bengal, following the resignation of Rukmini Naik.
The election process for the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand seats will begin with the filing of nominations on September 29. Polling will be held on October 16, with counting of votes scheduled for the same day.
Several prominent Rajya Sabha members are due to retire, including Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Arun Singh, Geeta alias Chandraprabha, Neeraj Shekhar, Brij Lal, Professor Ram Gopal Yadav, Ramji, B.L. Verma, Seema Naresh and Bansal.

The Rajya Sabha has 31 seats allocated to Uttar Pradesh and three to Uttarakhand, making the upcoming elections significant for the composition of the Upper House.
The elections will be conducted by elected members of the respective state legislatures, as Rajya Sabha members from states are elected through the proportional representation system by means of the single transferable vote.
