Andhra Pradesh, Oct 28: Cyclone Arnab has begun making landfall near Yanam, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions to the Andhra Pradesh coast. In Kakinada district, powerful waves damaged the Uppada Beach Road and swept away protective boulders along the shoreline.
The severe cyclonic storm is centred near the Narsapur–Yanam coast. According to disaster management officials, the landfall process is expected to continue for several hours, with the storm’s rear cloud band moving inland.
Winds Up to 150 kmph, Red Alert Issued
The cyclone is bringing winds of 125–135 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 150 kmph. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected across coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of southern Odisha. Authorities have issued red-level warnings for vulnerable coastal areas.
Schools and Tourist Spots Closed
Authorities have declared holidays for schools in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Alluri Sitharama Raju districts. Tourist destinations have been temporarily closed, while vehicle movement on Paderu ghat roads has been suspended due to heavy rain and the risk of landslides.
Officials on High Alert
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is reviewing the situation and coordinating with district collectors and police officials. Emergency control rooms and rescue teams have been kept ready to respond to incidents and minimise damage.
Officials have urged people to remain indoors, avoid travelling during severe weather and follow official safety instructions. Heavy rain and strong winds may continue even after the landfall process is completed.
