New Delhi, Oct 6: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among around 250 people detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday night following an over eight-hour sit-in protest at Akashvani Bhawan.
The protesters had gathered after opposition MPs were stopped from marching towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) office, located around 300 metres from Akashvani Bhawan.
According to police sources, around 50 MPs were among those detained. The protesters were being taken to the New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp.
Police forcibly removed Rahul Gandhi along with several Congress leaders and MPs, including K C Venugopal, Pawan Khera, K Suresh, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Imran Pratapgarhi, as the premises were cleared.
Rahul Gandhi Leads Sit-In Protest
Rahul Gandhi had entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises on Parliament Street and began a dharna after police stopped the opposition MPs from marching towards the Election Commission office.
The sit-in continued for more than eight hours, with opposition leaders raising concerns over alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
The protesters were particularly critical of what they described as “vote chori”, citing media reports alleging irregularities in the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Police Detain Protesters
After the prolonged protest, Delhi Police began clearing the Akashvani Bhawan premises and detained the protesters.
The detention of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several opposition MPs came amid growing political tensions over electoral rolls and allegations of irregularities.
The opposition has been demanding greater transparency from the Election Commission and has continued to raise the issue of alleged “vote chori” in public protests.
