New Delhi, Oct 11: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were released from police detention on Sunday after a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court ordered their release. The three leaders had been detained by Delhi Police ahead of the party’s planned protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to police sources, the three leaders were detained on October 10 shortly after their flight from Mumbai landed in New Delhi. Police personnel reportedly entered the aircraft and took them into custody before they could leave the plane.
The CJP leaders were travelling to the national capital to participate in the proposed demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party planned to demand his resignation over its concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission.
Delhi Police had denied permission for the proposed protest and tightened security across the national capital to prevent demonstrators from reaching Jantar Mantar. The detentions took place amid heightened security arrangements to prevent the gathering.
On Sunday morning, Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were produced before the Special Executive Magistrate. The court subsequently ordered their release from police detention.
However, their release came with conditions. The three leaders were directed not to engage in any activity that could disturb peace and tranquillity for the next one year.
The developments followed the police action against CJP leaders ahead of the planned demonstration, which sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The release of the three leaders marks a new development in the controversy surrounding the proposed CJP protest in Delhi.
