New Delhi, Sep 22 (PTI) A 48-year-old man carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 for his alleged involvement in vehicle theft and cheating cases was arrested, with police recovering five stolen cars, officials said on Tuesday.
Intezar, a resident of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended on September 11 while allegedly driving a stolen van near GTB Hospital, they said.
Acting on a tip-off that Intezar would arrive from the Shalimar Garden side in the stolen vehicle, police laid a trap near the hospital and intercepted him.
The van was found to have been stolen in an e-FIR registered at Hauz Khas police station on July 28, police said.
During interrogation and police remand, Intezar allegedly disclosed his involvement in vehicle thefts and revealed the names of associates involved in disposing of stolen vehicles, including Naeem, Nasir alias Chikna, Bilal alias Monkey and Aarif alias Doremon.
Based on his disclosures, four more stolen cars were recovered, taking the total recovery to five. The vehicles include two vans and three SUVs, police said.
A tablet with a plug, fake registration plates and temporary number plates were also recovered.
The five cases worked out were registered at Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh, Kalkaji and GTB Enclave police stations, covering south, southeast, west and Shahdara districts, officials said.
Police said the accused allegedly used electronic devices to steal vehicles and subsequently changed or replaced registration plates or used fake and temporary plates to conceal their identity.
The stolen vehicles were allegedly handed over to associates and receivers for further disposal.
Naeem was questioned, and a stolen SUV was recovered from his possession at the instance of Intezar, police said. Aarif was also questioned and later released.
Further investigation is underway to trace other members of the alleged interstate vehicle-theft network.
