Hardoi (UP), Sep 22 (PTI) A 20-year-old man drowned while trying to save his 11-year-old cousin from drowning in a pond at Hatyaharan Teerth in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in the Beniganj Kotwali area when Ritik, a resident of Sitapur, slipped into deep water while taking a bath in the pond.
His cousin Mohit Tripathi jumped into the pond to rescue him but also drowned, police said.
Another youth, identified as Raj, entered the pond after seeing the two drowning and raised an alarm. Locals, led by Hatyaharan resident Vinod Dwivedi, reached the spot with ropes and bamboo poles and pulled Raj to safety.
After considerable efforts, Ritik and Mohit were also brought out of the pond. They were taken by ambulance to the Community Health Centre in Kothawan, where doctors declared them dead, police said.
Mohit, a resident of Chhoti Line locality in Sitapur city, worked as an auto-rickshaw driver. He had visited Hatyaharan Teerth along with his mother Archana, maternal uncle Mithilesh, cousin Ritik and other family members.
Hariawan Circle Officer Laxmikant Gautam said Ritik drowned and Mohit died while attempting to rescue him. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, police said. PTI COR KIS SKY SKY
