New Delhi, Nov 6 The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Friday demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of tribal activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat, alleging that a “nexus” of Left-wing and religious conversion gangs along with land mafia elements associated with the Congress was responsible for her death.

In a post on X, VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal alleged that Bhagat’s campaign against land mafias and missionaries did not go down well with “criminal and anti-religious elements” in Jharkhand.

“The campaign launched by Nisha Kumari Bhagat over the past few years against the conspiracies of land mafias and missionaries did not go down well with criminal and anti-religious elements in the state,” he said.

“It appears that a nexus of Left-wing and religious conversion gangs, along with land mafia elements associated with the Congress, is responsible for her death,” Bansal alleged.

Questioning the circumstances leading to her death, he said, “What is the reason that a courageous young woman who had become the voice of the tribal community had to end her life through a Facebook Live just two days before Diwali, on the day of Dhanteras?”

He also sought to know who the elements were that allegedly forced her to take such an extreme step and what challenges her activities posed to the local police administration and the state government.

Bansal claimed that Bhagat was deeply hurt by the state government’s administrative machinery and its alleged mafia network.

“Her statements and views make it clear that she was deeply hurt by the administrative machinery of the state government and its mafia network. She wanted to free the tribal community from the clutches of Christian missionaries involved in religious conversions,” he said.

Describing the incident as “extremely unfortunate and concerning”, Bansal said it exposes the nexus between the “corrupt government machinery and missionary networks”.

“While expressing our deep condolences to the family, we demand a CBI investigation into the matter so that, in future, no tribal activist or personality associated with a movement is ever forced to take such an extreme step,” he said.

Bhagat allegedly died by suicide in Ranchi on Friday after going live on Facebook, accusing the state’s Hemant Soren government and land brokers of harassing her.

In the purported live video, available on her Facebook profile, Bhagat is seen crying and alleging that anyone who raised their voice against the “Hemant Soren government and its land brokers meant inviting death”.
