Muzaffarnagar (UP), Nov 2 A local court on Monday acquitted eight people in a murder case related to the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, citing lack of evidence, a government lawyer said.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Anurag Panwar acquitted the accused, observing that the prosecution had failed to prove its case, government counsel Narendra Sharma said.

The incident took place on September 8, 2013, in Lank village where 70-year-old Shakuran was killed. Her son, Yusuf Saifi, had lodged a complaint against the nine accused.

According to Sharma, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had filed a charge sheet against the nine people — Virendra, Vikas, Ankur, Jagpal, Arvind, Mohit, Anuj, Sandeep and Deepak — for allegedly attacking a house with sharp-edged weapons during the riots.

One of the accused, Deepak, died during the pendency of the trial, following which the remaining eight faced proceedings in the case.

The 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots had left more than 60 people dead and displaced over 40,000 others.
