Thane, Oct 31 A case has been registered against five individuals in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly cheating two persons of Rs 12 lakh under the pretext of selling gold at a discount, police said on Saturday.

The two were scammed over a period of about three weeks this month, they said.

An official said five persons got in touch with Mumbai resident Prajwal Shyam Patil (20) and his friend, offering gold at 80 per cent of the market value.

The duo met the accused in Kalyan, in neighbouring Thane district, and paid a total of Rs 12 lakh in multiple tranches between October 9 and 29, an official said.

However, the accused, identified as Santosh, Rakesh Mehta, Mukund Jha, Jayesh, and Agarwal, neither delivered the gold nor returned the money, he said.

Based on a complaint by Patil, a case of cheating was registered at Mahatma Phule Chowk police station in Kalyan, the official said.

Sub-inspector Hanumant Humbe is leading the probe, and efforts are being made to trace the accused, he added.
