Malappuram (Keralam), Nov 4 Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has written to Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil seeking his approval for two water supply projects in Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency areas in this north Keralam district, party sources said.

In her letter, the Congress MP said that the projects will benefit panchayats with a higher proportion of tribal communities and those belonging to weaker sections like the Cholanaykar community.

Vadra represents the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.

A Rs 362.3 crore project for Karulai, Amarambalam, Moothedam and Chokkad panchayats and a Rs 429.47 crore project for Chungathara, Pothukallu, Edakkara and Vahikadavu panchayats could not be awarded before the Jal Jeevan Mission cut-off date of August 16, 2024, she said in her letter.

She claimed that contracts could not be awarded for the projects before the cut-off date due to the contractors not being ready.

Vadra also claimed that while a pipeline for the supply of drinking water has been installed, there is no water available and requested Patil to relax the cut-off date and allocate funds immediately to complete the projects.

The letter was sent based on the suggestions given in a review meeting held at the Malappuram Collectorate in the presence of Vadra when she last visited her constituency, the sources said.
