Amaravati, Sep 17: It is now evident that the Adani-Google AI Data Centre in Visakhapatnam is expected to create only around 200 direct jobs in the data centre sector, compared with the 50,000-job commitment envisaged under the previous YSRCP government’s project proposals.
₹22,000 crore Incentives, But Just 200 Direct Jobs?
The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (APIIC), replying to a Public Interest Litigation on the proposed Google-Adani data centre, said the total project investment is expected to exceed INR 87,520 crore and create more than 200 jobs purely in the said field, raising questions about the number of jobs being created by the project despite receiving fiscal and non-fiscal incentives around Rs. 22,000 crores.
A PIL (W.P. PIL No. 137) has been filed before the Andhra Pradesh High Court challenging the environmental clearance and the allotment of 160 acres of temple land belonging to Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Devasthanam, Simhachalam, for the proposed Google-Adani data centre in Visakhapatnam.
APIIC told the Andhra Pradesh High Court in an affidavit filed last week, ‘I humbly submit that the investment of the total project is expected to exceed INR 87,520 Crores, and the same creates more than 200 jobs purely in the said field and thousands of jobs in construction and other allied fields.’
50,000 Direct Jobs Commitment under YSRCP Govt
Under the previous YSRCP government, G.O. MS. No. 1, issued on April 11, 2023, by the Information & Communications Technology, Electronics and Communications (IT&EC) Promotion Wing, records the construction of two data centres in Visakhapatnam, with a total investment of ₹21,844 crore and the creation of around 50,000 jobs.
The Andhra Pradesh government approved the allocation of 130 acres of land, along with a specific incentive package, to M/s Vizag Tech Park Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, for setting up a 200 MW Integrated Data Centre Park, IT Business Park, skill university, and recreation centre in Madhurawada, Visakhapatnam—backed by a commitment to invest a total of ₹14,634 crore and create 24,990 direct jobs.
Second Data Project M/s. Vizag Tech Park Ltd (VTPL) to set up a 100 MW data centre, IT and business park, skill centre, and recreation center with an investment of Rs. 7,210 Cr. and direct employment to 14,825 people.
