Beijing, Nov 4 China on Wednesday reacted cautiously to the Democratic Party’s gains in the US midterm elections, saying it will continue working with America to uphold and implement the important consensus reached between the top leaders of the two countries.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump had two rare summits this year which, according to China, were aimed at bringing strategic stability between the two countries.
“The US midterm elections are a domestic affair,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a media briefing here, replying to a question on Beijing’s view of the US midterm elections.
The opposition Democratic Party gained control of the US Congress and flipped key gubernatorial posts in the elections.
However, Mao said China stands ready to continue working with the US to uphold and deliver on the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, enhance communication, properly manage differences and expand cooperation, underscoring Beijing’s desire to insulate bilateral relations from changes in America’s domestic political landscape.
China is willing to build a constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity, she said.
Xi visited the US from Sept 23 to 25 and held a series of meetings with Trump, their second summit since Trump’s visit to Beijing in May this year. Beijing termed the two summits a historic milestone.
Mao also said China is in talks with the US and Russia for a trilateral meeting between Xi, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the upcoming APEC summit in Shenzhen, to be held on Nov 18-19.
She was reacting to the Financial Times report that officials from the three countries are coordinating arrangements for such a meeting.
