Chennai, Nov 2 The Tamil Nadu government is planning to introduce a weekly ethnic wear day for government employees across the state to support weavers and promote traditional attire, Tamil Development Minister A Rajmohan has announced.
Making the announcement during the Tamil Nadu Day celebrations here on November 1, the minister said the proposed dress code would also apply to his cabinet colleagues.
He, however, did not specify a date for the rollout of the initiative.
“I told the chief minister that it looked like a festival on the day he wore a silk dhoti and shirt. So I suggested why not ask govt officers and staff also to wear dhoti and shirt every week for a day,” Rajmohan said.
The Chief Minister gave the go-ahead after being informed that officers had themselves suggested discussing the move with him, the minister added.
