Hazaribag (Jharkhand), Oct 30 A security guard and staffers of a hotel had a narrow escape when armed men opened indiscriminate fire at the establishment in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district, police said on Friday.
No casualties were reported in the incident that took place in Matwari area under the jurisdiction of Korra police station on Thursday night, a senior officer said.
“The assailants arrived at the spot in a car, and upon reaching the hotel’s entrance, opened indiscriminate fire. The glass of the door shattered, while the security guard and other staffers had a narrow escape,” the officer said.
“Preliminary probe suggests that gangsters carried out the firing to intimidate the hotelier to extort him. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident,” Superintendent of Police Aman Kumar said.
Sadar Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rupak Kumar Singh said analysis of CCTV footage showed that three gunmen were involved in the incident.
The hotel owner is also a coal transporter, he said, adding no arrests have been made so far.
Police sources said the assailants might be associated with the notorious Rahul Dubey gang, but only further investigation could confirm it.
