Thiruvananthapuram/New Delhi, Nov 1 Keralam Chief Minister V D Satheesan, who took part in the massive INDIA bloc rally in the national capital on Sunday, described it as a major battle to safeguard democracy.

In a post on X, Satheesan said the massive turnout at Ramlila Maidan reflected the spirit of India and heralded a new era for the country.

“Looking at Ramlila, I see India. Ramlila Maidan is overflowing with people, and the spirit of a great battle to safeguard democracy burns bright. Amid this overwhelming sea of humanity, I, too, am just one small drop. A new era for India is within our reach. Moving through this sea of people, a deep conviction fills my heart: India is moving closer to its destiny. Together, we are stepping into a new India,” he said.

Several ministers from the Congress-led UDF government also took part in the rally in New Delhi.

At the rally, the opposition INDIA bloc called for the BJP’s ouster over allegations of “vote chori (theft)”. Rahul Gandhi claimed that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar would be removed and sent to jail for treason in the future, and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah would not be allowed to escape the law.

Later, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Pinarayi Vijayan said the rally reflected the country’s protest against alleged attempts to undermine democracy, the Constitution and citizens’ voting rights.

Demanding the resignation of Kumar, he said the removal of crores of voters from electoral rolls in the name of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) could not be allowed.

“Not even a single deserving person should be denied the right to vote,” he said.

The Marxist veteran said the Central government should ensure transparency in the electoral process and demanded that the restoration of the ballot paper system be seriously considered.

“Voting is the democratic right of every citizen. The fight to protect it is not the business of any political party alone. It is the responsibility of everyone who believes in the Constitution and democracy. May the voice raised at the Ramlila Maidan resonate louder throughout the country,” Vijayan said.
