Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 1 Keralam Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, thanking him for his Kerala Piravi greetings and outlining the state’s development vision and priorities.
In a post on X, Satheesan said his letter sought the union government’s cooperation and financial support for the state’s major development initiatives and assistance in addressing its fiscal challenges.
The letter highlighted key initiatives such as Mission Samudra, the development of Vizhinjam Port, infrastructure expansion, investment promotion, tourism and social welfare, he said.
Mission Samudra aims to transform the state into a global maritime and economic hub by developing an integrated logistics ecosystem centred on its ports.
In his letter, shared along with the post, Satheesan said, “I sincerely appreciate your reaffirmation of the Government of India’s commitment to Keralam’s development. The union government’s initiatives in strengthening National Highway 66, expanding railway connectivity through services such as Vande Bharat, … are important contributions towards improving connectivity and economic opportunities in the state.”
Satheesan said the PM’s observations on Keralam’s exceptional potential in tourism, Ayurveda and wellness “resonate with our development mission”.
“I fully share your belief that cooperative and competitive federalism must guide our collective efforts towards national development. Keralam remains committed to working constructively with the union government to strengthen infrastructure, encourage investment and unlock the state’s considerable economic potential,” he said.
The state, he added, looked forward to enhanced support from the Centre, including appropriate financial assistance for major infrastructure and development initiatives, particularly in the maritime, transport, industrial and social sectors.
“We seek the union government’s continued understanding and support in addressing the fiscal challenges faced by the state, as outlined in the various memoranda submitted to the Government of India.
“Timely financial assistance and greater flexibility in mobilising resources for priority development projects would substantially strengthen our capacity to accelerate growth while sustaining our commitments to social welfare and inclusive development,” Satheesan said in the letter.
He said that as the country advanced towards the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’, ‘Puthuyuga (new era) Keralam’ could emerge as a significant contributor to the national aspiration.
“I am confident that working together in a spirit of mutual trust, constructive engagement and shared responsibility, the Union and state governments can open a new chapter of progress and prosperity,” he said.
Satheesan was responding to Modi’s Kerala Piravi greetings on X.
“This special day celebrates the vibrant traditions and extraordinary spirit of Keralam. Blessed with abundant natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage, the state has always occupied a cherished place in our nation’s history,” the prime minister said.
“Keralam’s greatest strength lies in its people, whose dedication and commitment to excellence have earned admiration far beyond India’s shores. The achievements of the people of Keralam in several areas like healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, science and several other fields have made the nation proud,” he added.
He also expressed hope that the coming years would bring new opportunities, greater prosperity and continued progress to every person of Keralam.
Kerala Piravi marks the formation of the state on November 1, 1956, nearly a decade after India’s Independence. Before the formation of Keralam, the region was divided into three administrative units—the princely states of Travancore and Cochin, and the Malabar region, which was under British rule.
