New Delhi, Nov 2 Jamia Millia Islamia organised a ‘Run for Unity’ and a pledge-taking ceremony to mark the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, with the vice-chancellor, faculty members, staff and students participating in the events, officials said on Monday.
The programme was organised by the university’s Games and Sports Department on Saturday at the Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Sports Complex as part of the celebrations for Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).
Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif administered the pledge. Faculty members, non-teaching staff, students and members of the local community participated in the events, reflecting the spirit of unity and national integration, it said.
Addressing the gathering, Asif said Patel had played a key role in bringing the country’s diverse regions together and urged students to carry forward his vision through inclusivity, intellectual growth and nation-building.
He said the ‘Run for Unity’ should serve as a reminder of the need to work towards national integration beyond the annual observance.
Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi said Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was a reminder that diversity remained the country’s greatest strength when anchored in a shared commitment to the nation.
Director of Games and Sports Nafis Ahmad said sports had the power to unite people across backgrounds, adding that collective participation reflected the strength of a unified nation.
The university was recently rocked by protests over the demand to revive its student union.
