Nagpur, Oct 28 A private sleeper bus travelling from Jabalpur to Nagpur overturned here in the wee hours of Wednesday, killing its driver and injuring at least 10 passengers, including children, police said.

Police and local residents rescued the trapped passengers by cutting open the windows of the bus after it flipped over near an under-construction flyover in Kanhan town of Nagpur district around 4 am.

The deceased driver was identified as Sunil Kumar Yadav (40), a resident of Khursapar in adjoining Madhya Pradesh, police said.

The Maharashtra-registered bus, operated by a private travel agency, had left Jabalpur around 10 pm on Tuesday with 25 to 30 passengers, they said.

The injured passengers, including children, were initially taken to the Sub-District Hospital at Kamptee and later shifted to Mayo Hospital in Nagpur.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shashanth Gowda said rescuing the passengers was a challenging task.

“With the help of local residents, we arranged equipment to cut open the bus windows. Children were rescued first. We also called cranes, a JCB machine and six ambulances to ensure that the injured received immediate medical attention,” he said.

Based on a complaint, police registered a case against the private company constructing the flyover and its two senior executives — Project Director Bhavneet Singh and site engineer Tarun Kumar.

The complaint alleged that proper barricades and safety measures were missing near the flyover construction site.
