Dehradun, Oct 28 Independent MLA from Khanpur, Umesh Kumar, resigned from his post on Wednesday, the last day of the Assembly session for this tenure of the government.

He said that he was aggrieved by the attitude of the opposition as he claimed that he supported the opposition party in every step, “even sleeping on the floor of the house with them.”

Kumar said, “I have resigned from the state assembly as I always supported the opposition, but whenever I wanted to raise issues of Haridwar, whether it was about the farmers, interest on Kisan Credit Card, disasters faced by farmers, the pending dues of sugar mills in Haridwar, I never got the support. So now, next time, I will work harder and try to enter the assembly with more support from our own people.”

Kumar also informed the media that he is planning to contest in the next assembly elections on a ticket from Jan Nirman Party, which was founded by his wife, Sonia Sharma.

Kumar previously garnered headlines in 2016 when he conducted a ‘sting operation’ on the then-chief minister Harish Rawat during a rebellion within the Congress government.

His resignation comes at a time when Rawat has also expressed a desire to contest the upcoming assembly elections from the Khanpur constituency.
