New Delhi, Oct 31 The Delhi Police and representatives of the legal fraternity have agreed to set up a joint coordination committee to address grievances and resolve issues between police personnel and advocates, an official statement said on Saturday.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on October 30, attended by senior Delhi Police officers, representatives of the Bar Council of Delhi, the Coordination Committee of All District Bar Associations and executive committee members of various district court bar associations.

The proposed committee will serve as an institutional platform for dialogue and consultation to facilitate timely resolution of disputes and prevent misunderstandings between the two sides, the statement said.

It was also decided that dedicated nodal officers would be appointed at the district level and at the Police Headquarters to ensure effective communication and expeditious redressal of issues.

The police will, as far as practicable, inform the concerned Bar Association in cases where an FIR is registered against a practising advocate.

The Bar Associations will provide updated directories, in both digital and physical formats, containing details of their office-bearers and members to the respective district deputy commissioners of police (DCPs).

During the meeting, both sides emphasised the need for police personnel and advocates to treat each other with dignity and mutual respect. Police officials would extend due professional courtesy to advocates at police stations, while lawyers would similarly respect police personnel within court premises, the statement said.

The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere, with participants discussing issues concerning both institutions. They reiterated their shared responsibility towards upholding the rule of law, protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring the effective administration of justice.

The initiative aims to strengthen mutual trust and cooperation between the police and the legal fraternity and ensure the smooth functioning of the criminal justice system, it added.
