Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 2 CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan on Monday lodged a complaint with the Keralam Police Chief seeking legal action against those who allegedly created and circulated fake social media posts in his name targeting a student who led a protest at Maharaja’s College in Ernakulam.

The fake posts claimed that Govindan had made derogatory remarks about Nafeesathul Misriya, who led the protest at the college, describing her as having links with the SDPI, being a former Campus Front activist and holding extremist views.

Denying the remarks attributed to him, Govindan said the fake posts were created to discredit the students of Maharaja’s College, who had led a strong protest highlighting the issues faced by students at Kalady University.

The complaint names seven Facebook accounts.

Govindan has sought registration of cases against those behind the posts under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 120(o) of the Kerala Police Act, alleging that the fake posters were circulated to create hatred, social discord and incite violence.

Screenshots and links to the posts have also been submitted to the police along with the complaint.

In a statement, Govindan alleged that political opponents had resorted to false propaganda after their attempts to weaken the SFI and the CPI(M) failed.

“The Congress, the Muslim League and the BJP are competing with one another in leading such false campaigns,” he said.

“The Left will not bow down before such false propaganda. We will strongly fight every attempt to tarnish the party’s image, both politically and legally,” Govindan added.
