Kochi, Nov 4 BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao on Wednesday accused the Congress of trying to spread a “fake narrative” about the SIR of the electoral roll, and claimed that people would rebuff such attempts because they wanted cleaner elections and voter lists.

Addressing a press conference, Rao said the SIR had been carried out eight times earlier in the country, and that one of those exercises was during BJP rule at the Centre.

It was a long-overdue exercise, carried out as per the constitutional mandate given to the Election Commission, he contended.

The 13 crore voters whose names were deleted from the electoral rolls, according to Rao, could approach the EC to have them reinstated by submitting Form 6 along with the relevant documents.

Form 6 is for new voters.

He claimed that the Congress was running a propaganda campaign against the SIR because it felt it was getting a “buzz” on social media.

“It is mere fake narrative building. The people will rebuff such attempts. It is duplicitous behaviour where in Keralam you claim you won the mandate because of SIR, but in other states you oppose it,” Rao contended.

He claimed that the “cleaning” of electoral rolls had the total support of the people of India, who wanted cleaner rolls and elections and did not want ineligible non-citizens to find their names on the voters’ list.

“The Congress, however, wants to safeguard illegal residents,” he alleged.
