New Delhi, Nov 3 Congress’ Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam on Tuesday approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over reports that several students in Prayagraj allegedly sold their blood to meet educational expenses and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.

Speaking to reporters after filing a complaint with the NHRC, Gautam alleged that the situation in the country has become so dire that students are forced to sell their blood to continue their education, cover hostel expenses, and pay for coaching fees.

He said that certain individuals target poor and needy students, compelling them to sell their blood in exchange for sums ranging from Rs 4,000 to 5,000.

Gautam further alleged that this illicit trade involves the creation of forged medical slips and documents.

Referring to a ‘sting operation’ conducted by a newspaper, the Congress leader said that according to medical experts, there must be an adequate interval between blood donations but in this case, students were allegedly being made to donate blood as frequently as two to four times a month.

He termed this a grave violation of human rights.

Accusing the Uttar Pradesh government of failing to take action, Gautam pointed out that the issue had been raised previously, including through press conferences.

The Congress leader questioned whether the silence of the state government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on this matter implies their “tacit approval” of such a trade.

He asserted that a government incapable of providing for the education and employment of its youth has no right to remain in power.

He said the NHRC has assured a comprehensive investigation into the matter and promised appropriate follow-up action.

Gautam expressed hope that the Commission would intervene in this serious case and ensure that those exploiting the students are held accountable.
