Kolkata, Oct 30 West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said that people voted for the BJP in the recently held Rejinagar and Nandigram by-polls because of the work done by his government, and the same trend would continue in the upcoming municipal polls.
Adhikari, who attended a public outreach programme, ‘Janatar Darbar’, also assured financial assistance to the parents of a three-year-old girl needing a bone marrow transplant, which is likely to cost over Rs 40 lakh.
“How we are working for people will be reflected in the upcoming Howrah and Kolkata municipal corporation polls. We will also win emphatically in all the municipalities,” he told reporters.
The dates of the civic polls are yet to be announced.
“We registered overwhelming victories both in Rejinagar and Nandigram by-polls. (Earlier), we were elected by the people of West Bengal in the assembly polls,“ the chief minister said.
Adhikari claimed that people had rejected his predecessor Mamata Banerjee and her party, and she would not be able to win any election in the state.
During the Janatar Darbar, Adhikari assured financial assistance to a three-year-old girl needing a bone marrow transplant.
The girl from Purba Medinipur district is suffering from a serious illness and requires a bone marrow transplant, but her family is struggling to arrange the money for the treatment.
The girl’s parents, Rajib Maity and Mithu Maity, approached the chief minister at his public grievance redressal programme seeking help for their daughter Shreya.
According to the family, the bone marrow transplant is estimated to cost between Rs 40 and Rs 45 lakh, an amount beyond their financial means.
They are also facing difficulties in finding a suitable donor for the procedure.
Adhikari, who also hails from Purba Medinipur but represents the Bhabanipur assembly seat in Kolkata, assured the distressed parents of government support and said he would stand by the family in their efforts to secure treatment for the child.
A woman from Krishnanagar in Nadia district, who was attacked with acid five years ago, also approached the ‘Janatat Darbar’ here, seeking justice and protection, alleging that the accused has been threatening her and her family after securing bail.
The woman said she feared for her life and was apprehensive about staying at home following the accused’s release from jail.
However, she could not enter the public grievance hearing as she did not have the required entry token and had to wait outside the venue since morning, from where she appealed to the chief minister for intervention.
According to her complaint, the incident took place on July 14, 2021, when a local youth allegedly attacked her with acid at around 7.30 pm. She was then a Class 11 student.
She and her family alleged that ever since his release on bail, the accused has been threatening them and pressuring them to withdraw the case.
