Ranchi, Nov 7 Taking suo motu cognisance of the death of tribal activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat in Ranchi, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Saturday directed the authorities to ensure a time-bound investigation into the case and submit a detailed action-taken report within seven days.
Bhagat allegedly died by suicide on Friday after going live on Facebook, accusing the state’s Hemant Soren government and land brokers of harassing her.
“The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports concerning the death of tribal social worker Ms Nisha Bhagat in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on November 6, 2026,” the NCW said in a social media post.
NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to officials concerned, seeking an impartial and thorough probe, a review of the police response and action taken on her earlier complaints and preservation of the Facebook Live recording, call records and other digital evidence, it said.
The commission also called for accountability if any negligence or dereliction of duty is found on the part of police personnel, besides seeking necessary assistance for the deceased’s family.
“No woman’s suffering or cry for help should go unheard. Sensitivity, timely action, and accountability are essential to women’s safety,” it said.
