Thane, Nov 6 The Maharashtra government has approved the setting up of a new additional collector office in Kalyan in Thane to bring governance closer to citizens and ease congestion at the district headquarters, an official said on Friday.

A Government Resolution (GR) in this regard has been issued, he said, adding the decision comes in response to Thane’s massive geographical expansion, rising population, and rapid urbanization.

“Previously, citizens from Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Murbad, and Ambernath had to travel all the way to Thane district headquarters for revenue and administrative works. The new office is designed to streamline administrative efficiency and ensure the effective implementation of government welfare schemes,” the official said.

While the collector’s office will take care of Thane, Bhiwandi, and Shahapur talukas, the new office will have jurisdiction over Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Murbad, and Ambernath talukas, he said.

“The Collector of Thane will serve as the reporting officer for the Kalyan office, while the Divisional Commissioner of Konkan Division, Navi Mumbai, will act as the controlling authority. The GR explicitly specifies that powers vested solely in the District Collector will not be exercised by the Additional Collector office,” he said.

The government has directed that temporary premises be identified immediately to operationalize the new office, following which a permanent site and construction proposal must be submitted, the official added.
