Ranchi, Nov 6 Ranchi, Nov 6 (PTI) Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Friday accused the INDIA bloc of questioning constitutional provisions by alleging irregularities in the SIR exercise without proof to “spread anarchy” and bring about a “regime change” like in Bangladesh.
Addressing a press conference in Ranchi, Majumdar, the Union Minister of State for Education, said the opposition should present its policies and leadership before the people instead of questioning the BJP.
“If you don’t like the BJP, state your policies and present your leader before the public. We have Narendra Modi; show what you have…. If the people of the country believe that Rahul Gandhi should become prime minister, they will vote for you,” he said.
Claiming that the Congress had lost 56 elections, Majumdar said people would not vote for the party in the future either.
He also pointed out that the Congress had not been in power in Tamil Nadu since 1969 and had never ruled Jharkhand on its own since the state was formed.
The Congress had now aligned with “outsiders”, Left parties and their students’ union to spread anarchy in the country, he alleged.
Majumdar said opposition parties were questioning constitutional provisions and attacking the Election Commission without providing evidence that names of genuine voters had been deleted during the SIR exercise.
“This is the 12th time SIR is happening in the country. Of these, 10 SIR exercises were held when the Congress was in power. Since the Congress and its allies claim that 13 crore voters have been deleted from the electoral rolls, then we can say that such a thing happened earlier too,” he said.
He alleged that the opposition had not identified whose names had been deleted from the rolls.
Majumdar claimed that of the 13 crore names deleted, 6.3 crore belonged to people who had shifted their residence, 2.8 crore were duplicate registrations, and another 2.8 crore were deceased voters.
“When reporters asked him (Rahul Gandhi) about it, he said that ‘he feels that voters’ names have been deleted’. I want to tell him that allegations should not be based on feelings, but on evidence. The opposition parties moved the Supreme Court and faced humiliation,” he said.
“The Congress party’s new allies want a regime change in India, like Bangladesh. They are directly speaking about it. But in a democracy, regime change cannot happen on the streets,” he added.
Responding to the allegations, state Congress media in-charge Rakesh Sinha questioned why the BJP was avoiding questions about the Election Commission if the SIR exercise was transparent and impartial.
Questioning the functioning of institutions such as the EC was a way of protecting voters’ legitimate rights in a democracy, not defaming them, he said.
“Congress has no fear of facing defeat in elections, but Majumdar should address why the BJP fears questions from the common public regarding the impartial conduct of elections,” he said.
