In a major political signal from the newly formed government in Tamil Nadu, TVK chief Vijay has given significant representation to southern districts in his very first cabinet, sparking intense discussion in political circles. Political observers say this move reflects a calculated “South-focused” strategy similar to the regional balancing approach once associated with former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) contested independently and won 108 seats, emerging as the single largest party in its debut election. However, the party fell short of an absolute majority. Later, TVK formed the government with the support of the Congress, CPI, CPM, VCK, and IUML. Following this alliance arrangement, Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Strong Representation for Southern Tamil Nadu

Along with Vijay, nine ministers also took the oath. What has drawn widespread attention is the strong representation given to leaders from southern Tamil Nadu in the cabinet.

Among those inducted into the ministry are:

  • Nirmal Kumar, who won from the Madurai Thiruparankundram constituency
  • Dr. T.K. Prabhu, who defeated Naam Tamilar Katchi coordinator Seeman in the Karaikudi constituency
  • Keerthana, who emerged victorious from Sivakasi

In addition, Karuppaiah, elected from the Sholavandan constituency near Madurai, has been appointed as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Assembly.

Political Significance Behind the Move

With this, southern districts have been given an important role not only in the cabinet but also in the legislative administration. According to TVK sources, the party witnessed stronger-than-expected growth in southern Tamil Nadu during the elections, and the cabinet formation reflects an effort to consolidate that support base further.

Political analysts believe this regional emphasis is a strategic attempt by Vijay to strengthen TVK’s long-term presence in the politically influential southern belt of Tamil Nadu — a model reminiscent of Jayalalithaa’s carefully balanced regional political strategy.
