For many Congress workers, this victory traces its roots back to the difficult period following the 2021 Assembly election defeat, when Rahul Gandhi appointed Satheesan as the Leader of the Opposition. A native of Nattika in Ernakulam district, Satheesan began his political journey through student activism at S.H. College, Thevara. He later took on important leadership roles at Mahatma Gandhi University. His tenure as an office bearer in the National Students’ Union of India helped expand his reach within the Congress organization.
A lawyer by profession who practiced in the Kerala High Court, Satheesan’s electoral journey began in the mid-1990s with a defeat from the Paravur constituency. However, he quickly turned this setback into an opportunity, winning the seat in his next attempt and maintaining a stronghold for over two decades.
Long Political Career and Key Positions
A loyal supporter of former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, Satheesan won from Paravur in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021, marking over 25 years in legislative politics. In the 2021 elections, he secured victory with a margin of 21,301 votes, highlighting his consistent electoral strength.
Within the party, he has held several organizational roles, including Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Vice President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee. Known for his methodical working style, Satheesan carefully studies issues before expressing his views. His sharp and effective interventions in the Assembly have strengthened his position within the Congress, even during periods when he did not hold executive roles.
