Imphal/ Churachandpur, Oct 28 Thangkhankhup Guite, the 33-year-old son of the president of a Zomi outfit, on Wednesday announced that he will contest next year’s Manipur assembly elections from Thanlon in Churachandpur district.
His father, Thanglianpau Guite, heads the Zomi Reunification Organisation (ZRO), the parent body of the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA).
The ZRA is part of the United People’s Front (UPF), an umbrella organisation of underground outfits currently under a Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the government.
Speaking at a programme titled “Declaration Cum Blessings Prayer” at Dorcas Veng in New Lamka, he said, “I wish to declare that I have decided to contest the upcoming Manipur assembly election from the 56-Thanlon assembly constituency.”
Thanlon was previously represented by BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who died in February this year following complications from severe injuries sustained during the ethnic violence in May 2023.
Guite, a doctor who also heads Aibulon village in the Thanlon constituency, said his primary objective was to improve healthcare access for people living in remote areas.
“My main priorities for development will be healthcare, roads and communication, education, water supply, economic progress, and equitable development,” he said.
Elections in the strife-torn state will be due early next year.
