Gangtok, Oct 28 A 12-day adventure camp for 176 youths from the eight northeastern states began at Yuksam in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district, with participants embarking on a four-day trek to Dzongri inside Khangchendzonga National Park on Wednesday.
An official statement said that the camp is being organised by the Sikkim government’s Sports and Youth Affairs Department in collaboration with the Mountaineering and Adventure Institute of Sikkim, under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The programme aims to promote adventure sports, leadership, physical fitness, discipline and teamwork while fostering national integration and cultural exchange among young people, the department said in the press statement.
The trekking expedition to Dzongri was flagged off on Wednesday in the presence of Joint Director (Headquarters) Sonam Palzor Lepcha, Adventure Cell nodal officer Kunzang Gyatsho Bhutia and Khangchendzonga National Park Range Officer Tenzing W Bhutia, among other officials.
During the four-day expedition, participants will gain hands-on experience in trekking and adventure activities while exploring the natural and ecological diversity of Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the statement said.
The camp is expected to provide young people from across the Northeast an opportunity to develop outdoor skills, build camaraderie and strengthen inter-state ties through shared experiences in Sikkim’s mountainous terrain, it added.
