Thrissur (Keralam), Oct 29 A wild elephant that fell into an abandoned well at a plantation near here was rescued after hours of effort on Thursday, forest officials said.
According to officials at the Vellikulangara Forest Range Office, the elephant, which was part of a herd, fell into the well at Chokkana, Kundayi, near Palappilly.
Plantation workers who arrived early in the morning to tap rubber trees spotted the animal and alerted the Forest Department.
Forest officials reached the spot and launched rescue operations.
An earthmover was deployed to break one side of the well and create a sloping path to help the elephant climb out, officials said.
By around 10.30 am, the elephant managed to emerge from the well using the slope.
It subsequently rejoined the herd, which was roaming in the nearby area, officials added.
