Kolkata, Oct 28 Vedanta Resources founder and non-executive chairman Anil Agarwal on Wednesday said he would explore investment opportunities in West Bengal in sectors such as mining, minerals and power, expressing confidence in the state’s industrial potential and business environment.

Agarwal, who was scheduled to meet Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later in the day, said he had a deep personal connection with the state and would make every effort to pursue investment opportunities.

“I have a heart and soul in West Bengal, and I will not leave anything unturned if some opportunity comes here,” he said on the sidelines of an Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) event.

Highlighting Bengal’s infrastructure, mineral resources and skilled workforce, Agarwal said the state had the potential to regain its position as a major industrial hub.

“West Bengal was the place… the biggest industrial hub was Bengal. There is no better place because we have all the minerals, we have human resources, the best women’s skill power is also here,” he said.

“My area of interest will be in areas such as mining, minerals and power,” he said when asked about potential investments.

Agarwal also praised the prevailing business sentiment, saying the mindset of the people and leadership was positive.

Commenting on India’s growth prospects amid global economic uncertainties and volatile commodity markets, Agarwal said the country’s domestic demand and development trajectory offered significant opportunities for businesses.

“India is a very peaceful country… as far as the demand is concerned, India is the most developing country going forward,” he said, stressing the need to harness domestic natural resources and reduce dependence on imports.

“We need all our natural resources; we can’t depend on imports. We have to have our own,” he added.

On Vedanta’s growth plans, Agarwal said the company was targeting revenue of USD 50 billion and profit of USD 20 billion over the next two years.

He also spoke about the growing international attention on Kolkata’s Durga Puja celebrations, saying the city’s festive atmosphere and vibrancy could draw more foreign visitors.
