Mumbai, Oct 30 Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Friday said the agitation against the proposed Vadhavan port in Palghar district would continue until the project is scrapped.
Addressing an anti-Vadhavan port rally at Varor-Vadhavan in Palghar district, Sapkal said the project threatened the livelihoods and homes of residents, farmers and fishermen.
“The Congress fully supports the protest. People must not give in to government pressure. The project is intended to benefit industrialists rather than develop Palghar. It is against the interests of Maharashtra,” Sapkal claimed.
Sapkal further said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had taken the initiative to bring various public movements across the country onto a common platform.
So far, 36,000 movements have registered under the initiative, including 3,500 in Maharashtra, he claimed.
“These movements are focused on issues such as education, healthcare, land and the environment. Although their demands differ, they are fighting a common adversary. If the fight against Vadhavan is won, it will be a victory for all these movements,” Sapkal said.
The Maharashtra Congress chief alleged that the BJP government was trying to divide the protesters by following the British policy of “divide and rule”.
He appealed to people to remain united in their opposition to the project.
Shiv Sena MLA Ambadas Danve, former MLAs Hitendra Thakur and Kapil Patil, Deepak Pawar, Congress district president Satyam Thakur, party leaders and representatives of various organisations took part in the rally along with thousands of people.
