Jaipur, Oct 27 Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Tuesday said the state government is preparing a detailed project report for a scheme, under which surplus Narmada river water would be stored during monsoon to meet drinking water and irrigation needs in water scarce areas.

Digitally addressing the 15th meeting of the Narmada Control Authority Review Committee, Sharma said the government was committed to making effective use of surplus water available under the 1979 Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal award.

“The Rajasthan government is planning a project under which surplus water from Narmada river would be stored during monsoon to meet the drinking water and irrigation needs in areas with a water scarcity. A detailed project report is being prepared for this,” the chief minister said.

The meeting was chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil and attended virtually by the chief ministers of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Patil said an agreement reached among the four states on July 7, 2026, was being implemented through mutual cooperation and coordination.

Sharma said ensuring adequate water for drinking and irrigation, particularly in western Rajasthan, remained a priority.

He said the Narmada Canal Project had introduced mandatory sprinkler irrigation across its command area in Jalore and Barmer districts, improving water-use efficiency and benefiting farmers.

He also highlighted interstate water agreements, including the Ramjal Setu Link Project and the Yamuna water agreement, as important steps towards addressing Rajasthan’s water scarcity.
