Kathmandu, Oct 25 Nepal exported electricity worth over USD 39 million to India between mid-September and mid-October, according to an official said on Sunday.

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha said the country exported 633.986 million units of electricity to India during the period, earning Nepalese Rupees (NPR) 5.925 billion (roughly over USD 39 million) despite damage to several hydropower projects and transmission infrastructure due to flash floods in August.

Flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayas near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal, killing around 1,400 people, while more than 5,000 remain missing.

Homes, vehicles, roads, bridges and hydropower projects were damaged during the floods.

Around two-thirds of the electricity exported to India was supplied under bilateral power sales agreements, Shrestha said.

On Friday, Nepal also resumed exporting 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh through India’s transmission network.

The floods had damaged the Trishuli and Chilime hydropower plants, which were earlier approved to supply electricity to Bangladesh.

Shrestha said electricity exports to Bangladesh resumed after India’s Central Electricity Authority approved electricity generated by other hydropower projects for supply to the neighbouring country.
