Bodeli (Gujarat), Oct 20 A 65-year-old woman and her 32-year-old son were killed on Tuesday after being hit by a train while crossing a narrow railway bridge over the Narmada canal in Chhotaudepur district, police said.
The incident occurred around noon when Ganjiben Bariya and her son, Pareshbhai Bariya, were walking towards agricultural fields to deliver meals to relatives, police said.
“The mother-son duo was walking on a narrow railway bridge over the Narmada canal passing through Bodeli town. They were going towards the other side of the canal when they were run over by the Pratapnagar-Alirajpur train,” said sub-inspector AJ Pandya of Dabhoi Railway Police Station.
The bridge doesn’t have space for pedestrians to move aside when a train approaches, police said, adding that the deceased were residents of Jain Faliya in Bodeli.
Kiran Bariya, another son of Ganjiben, said his mother and brother were on their way to the fields to deliver a meal when the train arrived suddenly.
“People frequently cross back and forth here, but this train arrived suddenly. They happened to be heading towards the fields when the accident occurred,” he said.
He also claimed that locomotive pilots sometimes fail to blow the horn while passing through the area.
Navalsinh Bariya, an eyewitness, said he saw the woman and her son near the canal.
“As the train approached, they tried to run across, but they could not make it to the other side. The train struck them instantly,” he said.
