New Delhi, Oct 20 “Moving Between Fixed and Flow”, a solo exhibition by Delhi-based visual artist Barkha Gupta, brings together works exploring the relationship between memory, landscape and the materiality of artistic expression.

The exhibition, currently underway at Gallery Exhibit 320, also marks the launch of ‘PLATFORM|Exhibit 320’, a new initiative by the gallery dedicated to showcasing and supporting emerging artists from its roster.

Gupta’s practice examines how places are experienced and remembered, rather than simply documented.

The artworks in her latest exhibition were developed during her residency at Hampi Art Labs, where she studied the landscape through selective observation, focusing on texture, repetition, rhythm, colour, density, light, grids and interruptions.

These fragments form the basis of a visual memory that is subsequently reorganised through drawing. Gupta describes the process as one of “looking, selecting and remembering”, rather than attempting to reproduce a landscape in its entirety.

“In ‘Moving Between Fixed and Flow’, this process extends into an exploration of the mark as an intervention on a surface. Gupta draws a connection between the act of piercing a surface and the act of sowing or cultivation.

“This relationship has informed her recent engagement with embroidery, where the stitch becomes both a mark and an intervention,” reads the description of the exhibition.

Her exploration of textiles has also involved conversations with craft communities, including experiments with dyeing and embroidery practices with the Banjara community, they added.

The relationship between individual marks and larger structures is particularly evident in Gupta’s ceramic tiles. Each tile functions as a small field or fragment of terrain, retaining its own variations while contributing to a larger composition through repetition.

The resulting works bring together contrasting ideas of structure and flow, repetition and variation, and the mapped and the remembered.

Gupta, born in 1995, is a Delhi-based mixed-media and visual artist whose practice explores identity, memory, belonging and space.

Her work has been exhibited at Tate Modern in London, Apparao Galleries with The Art Platform, Samukha Gallery in Bengaluru, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale Student Biennale, Art Alive and Pulp Society in New Delhi, among other venues.

The exhibition will come to a close on November 30.
