New Delhi, Oct 28 The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) on Wednesday criticised the Congress over the INDIA bloc’s decision to hold a symbolic “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) row, saying any attempt to bypass prescribed legal channels to influence public perception or challenge official appointments is “counterproductive”.
Talking to PTI, LJP (RV) national spokesperson Ritesh Kumar said his party views the Congress’s proposal to hold a “public impeachment” of Kumar as a move that undermines India’s established constitutional framework.
“Public proceedings of this nature do not align with the formal legal and parliamentary processes designated for addressing grievances against constitutional authorities,” he said.
Kumar’s remarks came after the INDIA bloc decided to hold its planned ‘public impeachment’ of Kumar later this week at the official residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
The Congress alleged that its attempts to organise the event at the Ashok Hotel and Ramlila Maidan were denied permission.
Kumar said the LJP (RV) maintains that the integrity of independent institutions is essential to the democratic process.
“We advocate for respect toward the constitutional mandate of the Election Commission and urge all political entities to engage in discourse that strengthens, rather than diminishes, trust in democratic oversight bodies,” he told PTI.
The Congress on Tuesday had claimed it was denied permission to hold the “public impeachment” of CEC Kumar and accused the government of trying to “silence” the voice of common people after “destroying” the electoral system.
Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal had claimed the government-run Ashok Hotel initially allowed permission to host the event but later denied it after police intervention.
He said the Congress had booked Ramlila Maidan from October 25 to November 3 and decided to shift the event to the site.
He said 21 parties of the INDIA bloc had planned the “public impeachment” of Kumar as a curtain raiser on October 30 for the November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan on the “vote chori” charge.
