Nanded, Oct 24 A 40-year-old farmer was found hanging inside the office of a private finance company in Nanded, with his family alleging that he was being harassed over a loan of Rs 10,000, officials said on Saturday.
The deceased, Chandrakant Shinde, a resident of Malkoutha village, owned two acres of agricultural land.
According to Shinde’s family, employees of the finance company had brought him to the firm’s office on Wednesday in connection with the recovery of the Rs 10,000 loan. He was found hanging inside the office the following day.
Shinde’s family has alleged that the company’s employees confined and fatally assaulted him before hanging his body to make his death appear to be a suicide.
After being alerted, police inspected the scene. The process to register a case is underway at Vazirabad police station, inspector Ajit Kumbhar told PTI.
Nanded Superintendent of Police Neelabh Rohan told reporters that the exact cause of death would be established after the post-mortem of the body.
Local residents said coercive loan recovery practices were a concern, particularly as the state government had directed finance companies not to visit drought-hit farmers’ homes to recover loans.
