Chaibasa, Oct 29 An adult elephant was found dead in an irrigation well in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district on Thursday morning, officials said.
The incident took place at Sindrigu Tola in Badabaljodi village in the Noamundi forest range.
Villagers said the elephant belonged to a 22-member herd that had been roaming the area for the past four days.
They suspected that the elephant lost its footing and fell into the well, located on a slope near a paddy field, as the ground had become slippery following intermittent rainfall since Wednesday.
The elephant struggled through the night to climb out of the well but failed and was found dead in the morning, they said.
Range Officer Jitendra Singh said efforts were underway to pull out the carcass.
Following the incident, the herd damaged around 70 decimals of paddy fields, villagers said.
