Mumbai, Oct 26 Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Monday accused the BJP of defaming Congress leaders and said it should not lecture the opposition party on culture and values.

Reacting to the BJP’ slamming Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remark against Narendra Modi, Sapkal said the ruling party’s leaders should recall the language used by the PM and Union Home Minister Amit Shah against opposition leaders.

In a statement, Sapkal alleged that Modi had referred to Sonia Gandhi as the “Congress widow” at a public rally and used derogatory language against Rahul Gandhi.

He also cited Modi’s reported reference to Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury as “Shurpanakha” in the Rajya Sabha and remarks about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Sapkal further accused BJP MP Nishikant Dubey of making remarks against former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi in Parliament.

“BJP had remained silent when a purification ritual was conducted at a venue in Uttarakhand after Kharge addressed a public meeting there. Those who defame others should not lecture the Congress on culture and values,” Sapkal said.

He accused the BJP of adopting double standards in its criticism of Kharge. The BJP was trying to make an issue of Kharge’s remark because it had nothing to tell people about the government’s performance, Sapkal added.
