Thimphu, Nov 3 Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has dedicated one of 108 sacred stupas at the Gelephu Mindfulness City to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognising his commitment and India’s support for the realisation of the Bhutanese monarch’s vision for the planned city.
In a social media post on Tuesday, the king said the “special dedication” was made on Monday “after the 108 stupas were raised in Gelephu Mindfulness City”.
Gelephu Mindfulness City is a major development initiative envisioned by the Bhutanese king. It blends traditional Bhutanese values of spirituality and Gross National Happiness with modern innovation, green technology, and economic growth.
The king and Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju unveiled a plaque dedicating the 76th stupa to Modi, the post said.
The dedication is an “enduring symbol” of the king’s “profound appreciation” for Prime Minister Modi’s “unwavering commitment and India’s steadfast support” for the realisation of his vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City, it said.
In a message, Modi said he was “deeply touched” by the gesture of warmth and generosity of the Bhutanese king and people.
“I accept this with deep gratitude on behalf of the people of India. The Jangchub Chorten shall remain an enduring symbol of our shared spiritual and civilisational heritage and the special bonds of friendship between our people,” he said.
A stupa is a domed, hemispherical Buddhist monument built to house sacred relics and to symbolise the enlightened mind of Lord Buddha.
