Varanasi (UP), Nov 3 Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday termed the victory of party candidates in the Varanasi MLC election as a “double blessing” from Baba Vishwanath.

He also promised that if the Samajwadi Party forms a government in Uttar Pradesh after the 2027 Assembly elections, a “metro rail” will be operated in Varanasi.

Yadav was in Varanasi to pay tribute to late party office-bearer Rajesh Yadav and to inquire about the health of former district president Satish Fauji, who is unwell.

Speaking to reporters after arriving at the airport, Yadav said Baba Vishwanath has given a “double blessing” and ensured the victory of party candidates Ashutosh Sinha and Lal Bihari Yadav in the Varanasi MLC election. He said Samajwadi Party harbours no arrogance over its victory.

Yadav said, “The BJP’s double-engine government, which spoke of two-fold development, has got a double defeat and a double zero in this election.”

Everyone knows why this happened, he said, adding that people have not forgotten how the religious and cultural city of Kashi was treated.

Referring to the alleged vandalism at Manikarnika Ghat and lathi-charge against the Pal community, Yadav said the BJP government had attempted to erase the culture and heritage of Kashi, and the public responded in its own way.

He said Banaras (Varanasi) will only smile when the BJP is gone (out of power) and only then would all sections of society, including farmers and youth, prosper.

Later, the Samajwadi Party chief shared a video on X showing a waterlogged road in Varanasi and wrote, “This is the spectacle of the BJP’s world-class development claims in the prime city of Varanasi drowning in water out of shame. Couldn’t turn it into Kyoto, so they just put up a ‘photo of Kyoto’ instead.”

The BJP won six of the 11 seats in the recent Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections while the Samajwadi Party emerged victorious in five, including two seats in Varanasi.

Ashutosh Sinha was declared elected from the Varanasi Graduates’ constituency, while Lal Bihari Yadav won the Varanasi Teachers’ constituency.
