New Delhi, Nov 2 Trinamool Congress joint secretary Derek O’Brien on Monday took a swipe at the BJP over its nationwide street mobilisation against the opposition over the “vote theft” issue, saying its top leadership was playing catch-up.
The remarks came a day after the opposition alliance held its ‘Chalo Dilli’ rally at Ramlila Maidan, bringing together leaders and supporters of several constituent parties to protest against alleged electoral irregularities, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
“After Sunday’s big boom-boom show by INDIA, look who’s playing catch-up this Monday on the streets: the home minister, the BJP national president, the Bengal CM and state president,” O’Brien said in a post on X.
“Thank you. Imitation is the best form of flattery,” he added.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah led a march in Hyderabad on Monday, while BJP national president Nitin Nabin participated in marches in Bihar’s Bhagalpur and Kolkata as part of the party’s nationwide ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ campaign.
In West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and state BJP president Shamik Bhattacharya were also part of the party’s mobilisation.
The BJP has described its campaign as an effort to counter what it calls misinformation and disinformation by opposition parties and attempts to create anarchy.
The INDIA bloc rally on Sunday was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, among other opposition leaders.
