Kolkata, Nov 2 CPI(M) MLA Mustafijur Rahaman on Monday said BJP chief Nitin Nabin should have answered questions raised by the opposition INDIA bloc in Delhi over alleged irregularities in the SIR of electoral rolls, instead of holding a ‘Save Democracy’ rally in Kolkata.
Nabin led a march here on Monday, joined by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, as the BJP launched a counter-offensive against opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
“BJP chief Nitin Nabin has to answer the questions raised by the opposition INDIA bloc leadership in Delhi,” the lone CPI(M) MLA in the West Bengal Assembly told reporters here.
The Domkal MLA maintained that instead of Kolkata, Nabin should have led the rally in the national capital to answer the questions raised by the opposition bloc, of which the CPI(M) is a constituent.
Regarding AJUP leader Humayun Kabir’s call for a rally on December 6 from Rejinagar to Baharampur in Murshidabad district, Rahaman claimed that the Nowda MLA is helping the BJP by making such statements.
Kabir, whose foundation laying of a mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid on December 6, 2025, triggered a political controversy in West Bengal, said he will hold the rally on that date to reiterate his resolve to construct the masjid by 2028.
“People like Kabir should not be in politics,” the CPI(M) leader, who is also from Murshidabad district, said.
“Had he (Kabir) not made such sensitive statements earlier, the BJP would not have won the Rejinagar by-election,” Rahaman said.
BJP’s Shankharavh Sarkar defeated Aam Janata Unnayan Party nominee Golam Nabi Azad by 75,816 votes in Rejinagar. Sarkar secured 1,29,914 votes against 54,098 for Azad, son of AJUP founder Kabir.
Kabir had won Rejinagar in the 2026 assembly polls in April by over 58,000 votes. He retained the Nowda constituency after winning both seats.
