Hyderabad, Nov 1 To conserve water in view of this year’s rainfall deficit, the HMWSSB on Sunday launched the supply of treated wastewater for landscaping, gardening, public parks and other uses.

The supply through ‘Green Water Tankers’ was flagged off at the Secretariat here. The event coincided with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s 37th Foundation Day.

The initiative follows directions from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to supply wastewater treated at Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for landscaping, gardening, construction works and maintenance of public parks, so as to curtail the use of potable water, a release said.

In the first phase, 21 ‘Green Water Tankers’ are being deployed from 19 STPs, it said.

Besides tankers of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), 100 private tankers have registered with the HMWSSB, the release said.

The government has appointed STP-wise special officers to manage the tankers. They will supervise the filling of water, the assignment of tankers, water quality and related tasks.

The tankers carry a prominent warning: ‘STP Treated Water – Not for Drinking’.

HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy said the Board’s jurisdiction now covers 2,053 sq km.

Revanth Reddy, who congratulated HMWSSB employees on the Foundation Day, lauded the Board for the initiative.

He said government departments, construction companies and commercial organisations should use the treated water for construction, gardening and industrial purposes, the release said.
