Balod, Oct 31 Senior BJP MLA Domanlal Korsewada was laid to rest with state honours in the presence of senior political leaders and a large number of people at his native village in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district on Saturday.
Korsewada, who represented the Ahiwara Assembly constituency, a Scheduled Caste-reserved seat in Durg district, died while undergoing treatment for a lung-related ailment at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Friday.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, his cabinet colleagues, MPs and MLAs reached Bhendra village, around 70 km from Raipur, to pay tribute to the 78-year-old legislator.
Food Minister Dayaldas Baghel, Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, School Education Minister Gajendra Yadav and Skill Development Minister Guru Khushwant Saheb were among those present.
Sai offered floral tributes and lent his shoulder to the mortal remains as they were taken for the last rites.
He also met the bereaved family members and conveyed his condolences.
Describing Korsewada’s death as deeply painful for the people of the region and for him personally, Sai said the MLA’s simple personality, warm demeanour and dedication to public service would always be remembered, an official statement said.
Earlier Korsewada’s mortal remains arrived in Raipur by air on Saturday morning.
Arrangements had been made at Swami Vivekananda Airport for people to pay their last respects.
The body was then taken to his official residence in Bhilai-3 in Durg district, where family members, public representatives and well-wishers paid their tributes, before it was taken to his native village for the funeral.
A two-time MLA, Korsewada was elected to the Chhattisgarh Assembly from Ahiwara in 2008 and 2023. He was also the vice-chairperson of the Chhattisgarh Scheduled Caste Development Authority.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son, both of whom are married, a party functionary said.
Meanwhile, the Balod district administration has decided to hold the district-level Rajyotsav (state foundation day) celebrations in a subdued manner as a mark of respect for the departed MLA, the statement said.
All cultural programmes scheduled for the event on November 2 have been cancelled. The celebrations will now feature only an exhibition showcasing government welfare schemes and development works undertaken in the district, it said.
